Sacramento - Updated fire and building codes developed to increase fire resistance in buildings and homes across California will take effect in January 2011. The new codes, which will be enforced by CAL FIRE’s Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and fire and building departments throughout the state, bring California in line with the 2009 International Building, Fire, and Residential Code. The new codes were adopted by the California Building Standards Commission.

Nearly four years ago, when the residential market was hot, local jurisdictions were approving residential projects left and right, while developers were pulling building permits 60 days after tentative map approval. There was never a question about the length of the project’s approval and possibly needing to extend the approved map before it expired. Four years later, paper lots sit on bookshelves or in boxes with little indication that the approved lots will ever be developed.
